Wear sunscreen—everyday

Sunscreen is one of the most important steps in any skincare routine. While most people think sunscreen is only for summer, it’s important to protect from the sun year-round. Anytime you are outdoors, you are exposed to harmful sun damage—no matter the temperature. Wearing at least SPF 30 broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen helps reduce your risk of skin cancer. Moisturize daily

Hydrating your skin is one of the most important steps in any skincare regimen. Drinking water and using a daily moisturizer help keep skin hydrated. While it may seem like moisturizer is only for dry skin, it’s vitally important for all skin types. Moisturizer helps balance the skin and control oil production. Moisturizer can also help reduce premature aging, fight against acne and keep skin texture stable.

Perform regular self-skin exams

Checking your skin for changes is important to gauge your skin health. Make notice of any spots that bleed, itch excessively or do not heal. Be sure to check moles regularly for any changes in size, shape or color. Use a mirror to check hard-to-see places and ask a partner for help. If you notice any changes, contact your doctor.

Don’t pick, poke or prod your skin

We know it’s tempting, but please don’t pick at your skin! Contrary to some popular belief, you do not have to pop zits or dig out blackheads. In fact, picking at your face can cause scarring that is difficult to get rid of and affects skin texture. In addition, uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation can also occur from picking at acne or other skin spots.

Understand your skin type

Everyone’s skin is different. That’s why it’s important to understand your skin’s needs and create a routine that works for you. Understanding your skin type is a great first step in crafting a skincare regimen. Observe your skin and the types of products you use to help discover your complexion. The most common skin types include:

  • Dry: skin that feels dry may be characterized by flaky or scaly patches and itchiness and is most common in colder climates
  • Oily: excessive oil production occurs when the sebaceous glands produce too much sebum and is more common in warmer climates and humidity
  • Combination: dry and oily skin often occur in tandem, with oily skin most commonly occurring in the t-zone and cheeks
  • Sensitive: skin that reacts badly to skincare products or becomes red easily may be sensitive, due to allergies or excessive dryness

If you have skin concerns, the best thing to do is see a board-certified dermatologist. A dermatologist and dermatological nurse or physician’s assistant can diagnose and treat a variety of skin, hair and nail conditions.
