08 Sep Service Spotlight: What is Microdermabrasion?
Are you concerned about your skin’s tone or texture? Have you thought about trying microdermabrasion? Exfoliating treatments have a long history. But microdermabrasion wasn’t introduced to the United States until about 1990, with the first FDA-approved device in 1996. Learn all you need to know about microdermabrasion before booking your appointment.
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a noninvasive cosmetic dermatology treatment. The goal of this treatment is to remove the uppermost layers of skin. This removal buffs away dead skin cells to promote cell turnover. Using a small handheld device, a licensed aesthetics provider exfoliates the skin with tiny crystals or a diamond tip to remove the top layer. This treatment can be done on the face and neck to promote smooth, youthful skin.
What are the benefits?
Most often, patients have concerns with fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, age spots or dark spots. While it only offers temporary benefits, microdermabrasion can help correct these issues. In addition, all skin types can benefit from microdermabrasion. Some of the most common benefits include:
- Fade scarring
- Smooth texture
- Even tone and pigmentation
- Clear congested skin
- Stimulate collagen production
- Reduce signs of aging
What to expect?
There is no special preparation for microdermabrasion. Always be sure to let your provider know what medications (topical and/or oral) you are taking before your appointment. A microdermabrasion appointment usually lasts about 30 minutes. But the duration depends on the area of treatment. During the treatment, you may feel a mild scratching sensation, but it should not hurt. You may also feel a slight “vaccuming” sensation as the device removes dead skin cells. The number of treatments required will depend on your skin type, concerns and goals.
Redness and tenderness after your session are normal and usually fades quickly. Usually, there is no recovery period. This makes microdermabrasion a good “lunch break” treatment. After your session, be sure to wear sunscreen and avoid exfoliating products. Try using gentle products for a few days after your treatment. Also, avoid acne medication for a week or as your doctor prescribes.
Is it safe?
Yes, microdermabrasion is safe when performed by a professional aesthetics provider. As with any aesthetic skin treatment, though, there is a chance of infection. Yet, infection is rare. If you are on medication, particularly acne or skin medication, be sure to talk with your provider. Additionally, this treatment is not typically recommended for those with sensitive skin. This includes conditions like psoriasis, eczema or rosacea. The most common side effects include redness and change in pigmentation.
