What is Microneedling?

What is Microneedling?Do you have uneven skin tone or texture? Both are common problems. Uneven skin may be from acne scarring, hyperpigmentation and more. If you’ve been searching for a solution, you might want to consider microneedling. If you’re wondering what that is, look no further. Here is all you need to know before considering microneedling.

What is microneedling?

First, let’s start with the basics. What is microneedling? It’s a procedure used to treat skin tone and texture. It works by making micro-injuries to the skin. Another term for microneedling is collagen induction therapy because it stimulates collagen development. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein in the body. It is a structural protein that holds the body together.

How does it work

microneedling procedure involves a tool or applicator with small needles. These create micro-punctures in the skin. The goal of these micro-injuries is to stimulate collagen growth and cell turnover. The number of needles and depth they penetrate may vary depending on the type of procedure. For example, Loven Aesthetics has a basic applicator or the Fractora by InMode. Both address the same skin issues in different intensities.

When the micro-injuries are made to the skin, skin cells regenerate faster. The applicator targets the sub-dermal layers of skin. This allows products to better absorb in the skin. It also makes the procedure more effective than topical treatments alone. The resurfacing from micro-injuries creates smoother, firmer skin. This helps rid the skin of uneven tone and texture.

What does it do?

Microneedling has many benefits and can be done on the face, neck, stomach, thighs and more. It can also address many skin issues. Some of these include:

  • Cystic acne and adult acne
  • Acne scars
  • Large pores
  • Lack of skin elasticity
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Stretch marks
  • Hyperhydrosis [excessive sweating]

Is it safe?

Microneedling is a safe, minimally invasive skin therapy. This means it doesn’t require anesthesia or special preparation. As with any medical procedure, there is always some risk. After care is very important for microneedling—particularly sun care. The skin is sensitive after microneedling. Because of this, you should avoid excessive exposure to sunlight and wear a broad-spectrum SPF. Also, gentle cleansing is important to avoid irritating the sensitive skin. Keep the skin clean and avoid vigorous exercise for a day or two to help prevent infection.

If you are on certain acne medications, like Accutane, please talk with your provider before your sessions. Some medications cause heightened skin sensitivity. You will need to stop taking them before your sessions. Also, microneedling may not be right for people with severe eczema or psoriasis. Be sure to talk with your provider to find the best treatment options for your skin.

What should I expect? Is it painful?

Most patients will need anywhere from 2-6 sessions, depending on the type of procedure. A basic microneedling plan will likely include 4-6 sessions with the smaller applicator. However, a Fractora patient may only need 2-3 sessions with the larger applicator. During microneedling, your provider applies a topical anesthetic to the area. This numbs your skin about 30 minutes before your session. The sensation is different for each patient and will depend on the type of therapy you are having done.

After microneedling, you can expect minor irritation and redness for a day or two. This may include dry skin or itchiness. But, these symptoms usually only last about 24-48 hours after a session.
